Eclipse VS GG Geass subs.

Why does Eclipse pwn GG fansubs?
During the Shirley’s death scene (ep 13, I think I dled that because eclipse was taking their time), gg translate that she likes Lulu. WTF?! I think at that time the director wanted to communicate love, which would be more precise.
The person is dying ffs, doubt they will say “I like you” as their last words.
Eclipse on the other hand knows exactly what the director is trying to say here. And translate it in the appropriate way.
However sometimes eclipse uses words that are only known to poets and academic language masters. So it’s hard to get the point wtf the characters are talking about.
And the other thing is that eclipse does not troll the internets.

Ehh…like what ? English is not my native language, but i dont remember reaching out for my dictionary when watching Geass.
Besides, even if that WERE true, isnt Geass mainly about huge doses of pathos anyway ?

Why the WTF? She says “suki”, not “daisuki” or “aishiteru” which any semi-respectable weeaboo will tell you literally means “like” and not “love.” Clearly Eclipse have taken some artistic licence, leaving you looking like a troll yourself.

Ya, maybe if people stopped downloading crappy modified versions that are not related to the group they’d stop complaining about stuff that’s perfectly fine in release.

I think “What the director was trying to say” was what the woman said. She says “suki” as in “I like Lelouch. Do you like Lelouch?” to Suzaku, she meant like. Eclipse tends to embellish at least once an episode. gg is usually closer to my own, literal translation.

Sometimes Eclipse makes mistakes or misinterpretations too, even horrible ones even.
None of the sub groups are perfect.

I Agree… i just tried to watch gg’s version of macross frontier 24. And it was the worst thing ever. Many things weren’t even bothered to be translated along with the fact that they are spendinging time translating the song that has been thru the whole animie and ignoring the story bassed stuff…. gg blows… learn to pay attension and keep you personal shit outta you fansubs please i don’t care who you wana lay or who you wish was whatever…. i don’t want your comments so keep them to urself…. pass that to gg for me they are morons and i’ll leave it at that

late post here, but yea…I got me some Eclipse subs just because I realized that that gg trolling incident just made them look like complete idiots lol. That and they left all those annoying commercials in their Macross F releases.
And yea… “what the director is trying to say” is the key phrase here. Japanese is a very contextual language, and the word suki itself can mean love or like depending on context. In this case, I doubt Shirley would confess like a little school girl in the face of her own death.

Actually, gg’s subs use a far more extensive and concise vocabulary than Eclipse’s would ever aspire to.
ie, in Episode 6 of R2,
gg: “I know [Nunally] is your raison d’être…”
Eclipse: “I know this is the reason you live for.”
Evidently, gg’s choice of the term ‘raison d’être’ is much more poetic and academic than the literal translation Eclipse opted for.
Hence, I believe that this misconstrued opinion is merely a case of extreme ignorance and poor taste on your part.

Although I haven’t watched Code Geas, I’ve seen a lot of Eclipse’s work, and I can say that it’s normally fairly good but sometimes has mistakes. Without going into specific examples, Eclipse “usually” doesn’t translate everything as literally as other groups, and they also keep things short.
Of course that’s not always true–if you watch the OPs/EDs they sub, you’ll see that while they normally keep things short, they try not to overly interpret the meaning of ambiguous passages in songs. Meaning the English speaker has to try and figure out the deeper siginifcance of what is being sung just like the Japanese speaker, without it being handed to them on a silver platter.

I liked that GG used the term “raison d’être” in the beginning of episode 25 or R1. Looking back now, I might have preferred to see the GG subs for R2 instead of simply downloading Eclipse. I’m glad that I looked up that word because of watching an anime, and thought the word was a very good fit for the situation. Eclipse would be better off using such sophisticated vocabulary in their sub work.

It doesn’t matter about who the fuck is more poetic or who has the bigger dick (me) it’s about quality and consistancey <(spell that wrong?) GG they are just a bunch of tree hugging fucks that try to be funny while beating their puds. But yeah Eclipse is probably one of the best out there, agreed.

lol for example, as far as I know, Hajimemashite means it is a beginning (literally) but corresponds to nice to meet you in English so I understand what he means.
Next, who the hell cares about what the fuck type of vocab you use? Oh why not, instead of subbing it with,”Oh my God, you scared me!”, we put,”Holy fucking shit, you absolutely flabbergasted me!” You know what? Who cares. As long as it’s accurate, no one gives a fuck.
When there’s a huge subbing mistake, that’s what I care about, when there’s some other sub out there using more complicated dictionary, I won’t cum, I won’t give hot dickings, I won’t go in orgasm as that fansub will fill my pure need of high-level douchebag vocab, I’ll just say,”So what? Nobody cares.”

1. If it bothers you so much, why dont you go in and edit the subtitles to whatever you want. It doesn’t take half a brain cell to do that.
sure, we want accuracy, but gg does a damn fine job in my books. If it really bothers you to the point where you have to rage about it somewhere else, go fucking change it.

Protip: In 90% of anime confessions the girl will use ’suki’, not ‘daisuki’ or ‘aishiteru’.
This is also quite common in schools in America; saying you ‘like’ someone can often be misconstrued as ‘being in love’ or ‘having a crush on’.
In Japan, this is taken quite a bit farther. While the literal translation would be, “I like you,”, it’s reasonable to say that she meant to confess her feelings to Lelouch; after all, telling someone you like them (platonic sense) is hardly something to be saying when you’re about to die.

GG tends to be more literal in their translations than other groups. While I have nothing against Eclipse in general (I like their work overall), their Geass work wasn’t up to par. If you were going to trash GG in favour of Eclipse, Geass R2 is probably the worst example you could come up with.
On that note, I do agree that Eclipse using “love” instead of “like” was probably more appropriate for the circumstances. But that’s what you get with gg’s literal translation. And personally, being over-literal is more hit than miss.

I generally agree. Menclave does excellent work. Their work pace is incredibly slow, but their overall production (translation, op/ed, timing etc.) is superb.
